Roulette Handling depression after losses

I am trying to work on my 'gambling psychology' and when it comes to loses even if it's a small amount I find that I always feel so much worse than I know I should. I just hate losing, but I know it's part of the game. What can I do to help manage my emotions better?

I think the best thing for you is to do the very thing that you dislike but with the clear intention of training and conditioning yourself to feel better about your losses. If you expose yourself to it enough times then eventually it will start to feel less and less severe.

Make sure that you're not losing more than you can afford and limit your bankroll. If you can tell yourself the loss is accounted for, it makes it easier to take. Also, compare your loss against the cost of an evening's entertainment and drinks. If it is the same or less than a night out would cost, then you could consider it well spent for a good evening's play.

I think the best advice that I can give you is to only bet money that you definitely can afford to lose and you won't miss when it's gone. I think a lot of the feelings of depression come from feeling like you've lost something important to you.

I think exposing yourself to the thing that is causing the depression in the first place might not be a wise thing to do in case you just spiral into more depression. The best thing is to find out what causes this and get to the bottom of the matter. For instance, maybe Koontz is right and you're getting that feeling of loss because you're gambling with money that you can't afford to lose.

It's a healthy and natural reaction!
People who are addicted to gambling don't feel the same kick in the stomach as beginners any longer because they get used to it...
As others said, never gamble your rent and food money.
Save until you have more than 200 the minimum betting amount and then proceed to bet with a good money management system, as if you were an investor, not a gambler. Without a healthy bankroll you will lose. Without money management you will lose. Without good bet selection money you will lose.
With a professional attitude you will find that sometimes you'll be up and sometimes down. The aim is to stay in the game long term.
Never play when depressed because even though the odds are the same if you are depressed you will miss opportunities, focus on the negative and make erratic choices.
"Scared money is lost money" they say.

That is a great way to put it, purple. From the way you explained it, gambling seems to be a lot like forex or stock trading. Same concepts of money management, risk and psychology.

I've heard quite a few people express that same view as you just did, Niall and I also see the similarities between trading on the stock market and gambling in casinos - except that luck has nothing to do with becoming a profitable trader.

I agree that it's a very normal reaction to the situation and if you didn't feel that sense of loss then you would probably gamble more or chase losses and end up losing more in the long run.

I think the way we handle losses correlates with our normal personality and mental health. Someone who gets depressed easily in everyday life is definitely going to get depressed when it comes to losses. You just have to know yourself and your emotions.

I totally agree with you, Shadowblue. It all depends on your character and the way you view yourself and your gambling personality. For some it might be easier to take losses, but it doesn't make you an addict, neither does it mean that you have a problem with gambling.

Muay, exactly. I think that some people definitely associate being extremely depressed by a loss with addiction, when that just isn't the case at all.

No one can ever handle a loss well enough, and even the pros and advances players will tell you they always have a hard time when they lose. I always take a break in an attempt to get over a loss. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

A long losing streak can really ruin your week. Winning on the other hand, can really start or end a week on a high note. I still struggle to pick myself up after a huge loss and I think every gambler needs to learn how to move on from losses.

Save until you have more than 200 the minimum betting amount

I think you should start with 1000 times the minimum, then if you have a losing run initially, you have a better chance of climbing back out of the hole. Assuming you don't go head on into a bottomless pit.

I know I hate losing and the feeling sits with you for a while and as others have said, unless you are an addicted gambler you never get used to it.
Happily I don't have losing sessions anymore (or haven't for a few years), but I do have losing streaks within winning sessions.

I do know what you mean about feeling low after losing, but I'm afraid that's all a part of the game. You can't have winning without a bit of losing too, all you can do is make sure you enjoy playing still.

If you get depressed after a loss, you shouldn't be playing at all. Gambling is the industry name for "being stupid and paying money for nothing". It's more subtle term is "gaming" or "entertainment".

A professional player will accept losses, that do occur every now and then. Most importantly they will assess what went wrong. Sometimes it is plain bad luck, but more often it's something you forgot to do, or didn't do properly.

In the case of roulette, getting an edge can go against you if you make a mistake. For example, you could be predicting the correct winning area. Then you make a mistake, and your predictions are AVOIDING the winning area. This means you actually lose faster than random bet selection.

In a situation like that Steve, you must just end up kicking yourself all that much harder! To predict right and make a mistake is a lot worse than just being randomly unlucky I reckon!

It's an easy mistake for newbies to make. identifying and resolving the problem is easy, but needs proper observation and procedures.
