OK so I am a gifted amateur looking for training, and there are hundreds of people waiting to take my money. What is a reasonable fee for a coach? How do I tell if they are a good one? What should I be really wary of?

I am also a beginner like you and I think the best thing for you to do is to spend at least a couple of weeks researching and learning the basics for yourself and finding out about coaching fees before you dive right in.

You can check the names of teachers you are interested in out, to see if they have any background or have made a name for themselves playing the game. Established and long running schools are less likely to be scams, but it is worth checking on forums to see whether it is something people recommend or warn against. Beware of claims that are too good to be true, like if someone says they will make players millionaires overnight.

The other thing I would say is learn from several people. There are many different approaches to playing cards, depending on whether you play the casino, other players, the game you choose etc, so you need to find the one that fits your playing style. Knowing a few alternatives does help.

I'm not sure how much you should be spending, because if the person is an expert then it's worth it to pay a lot, but if they aren't, you should be paying a lower rate. I would also say to be wary of scammers.

I agree with you, Caitlin which is why it's best to do your own research before paying anyone. You need to know what level they are at and what their rate is compared to other coaches out there.

Most of the online coaching courses are between $10 and $29.99 a month and cover the basics. I haven't done any so I can't recommend them. Whether they would help you really does depend on what you are trying to learn and how you learn best. What do you want from a course, the basics which are free online in a lot of places, or advanced play and one-to-one guidance?

I can say from experience that you should definitely be checking the credentials of whoever you hire to help you, otherwise you may end up with a con artist.

Well it's gambling, so I guess there's always going to be people who want to take my money for nothing! I hope you didn't have too bad an experience.

I think it's best to hang around places like this forum where you can get advice from people who have actually been there and know what they are talking about. Just read through some of the threads here and the experts will start to stand out to you.

If you are looking to just learn the basics of the games, I don't think there is any need to pay someone because you will find loads of information online for free. But if you want to up your game, that's a different story. If you pick a tutor/teacher, you need to do a thorough check on them before handing them your money. It would be helpful if you can talk to some of the people they taught, in order to give you a better idea.

I caught on to the fact that I was being scammed after the first meeting when I realized I knew more than my "coach" did. I really do hope you have good luck.

Seena, I think you're right in saying that there are a lot of resources online these days. Youtube is a great source, but there's also a lot of good ebooks and websites out there.

I am also in favor of taking the time to learn a little more by yourself first before signing up with anybody. Also use this time for researching these coaches and how much they charge.

This is quite a tricky question considering that different people would be willing to day different amounts for this kind of training.

I've never paid for any course and I think it makes sense to first do most of this research on your own. There would be no need to pay a huge amount unless you are thinking of turning pro.

I think that now it is very hard to find a man who really will teach you how to play. Just because there are a lot of swindlers everywhere. They will tell you that the problem is that you are unlicky and not just because they didn't do anything to explain you all details of this business

There are lots of swindlers out there who will chance on any newbies and make money out of them. I'm not saying that coaching is bad but there should be value for any money that's going to be spent. Otherwise, you can actually learn on your own and make use of the resources available for free.

It is not a bad thing to pay for your training if there's evidence that this will make you a better player. Don't fall victim to all the websites masquerading as professional; most of these scam people. I would strictly pay for such training out of my winnings.

I've never paid for training before but this is not to discourage anyone from taking that route. There are so many legit coaches that will provide what is needed. On the other hand, there are many more quacks that are always ready to take advantage of others.

So decide by your own do you want to pay or not but you should know that you can became a very good player without any trainers
