How big a bank roll am I going to need to play video poker if I want to maximize my odds of achieving my goal of seeing a royal flush before going broke?

I've heard that a good rule of thumb is to have about a thousand betting units for the game you're going to play which means that if you're playing for $1.25 a hand then you should have a minimum of $1250.

The odds are against you seeing one in an evening of play. One example I've seen said that if you play 300 hands an hour, and play ten hours a week, you might see one in three months. If the odds are 40,390 to one, then that's how many hands you'd need to play to maximise chances so your bankroll would need to cover minimum buy-in for 40,390 hands, but remember it is random so you could play for years and never see one.

Wow. Those stats are totally disheartening. Can anyone tell me again what the point of playing this game is then if there is no chance of winning in the long run?

@Tredger asked about getting a Royal Flush, not winning. You don't need a Royal Flush to win, you just need one of the winning combinations. A Royal Flush is like hitting the jackpot at slots, and it doesn't happen often.

Thanks for that clarification, Sevens. I was wondering about that question as well. Video poker has quite the learning curve, doesn't it?

While true, you must realize that once you begin playing a machine, YOU may not have to play 40,000 hands to see a Royal Flush, th emachine has to play the 40,000 hands. I have a friend who hit one in one pull on a 9/6 machine. So, someone else played that machine a lot before him. So, you are not starting from zero when you play.

You beat the game with the free play offers because the game has a house advantage which insures you will lose in the long term. The free play offers offset your losses and in fact can make you a winner overall.

It takes about a month of practice for a advantage player to learn "perfect" playing strategy for video poker. It was expected that you could play error free at about 700 hands per hour. You were tested on a online system for three levels of hands, simple, moderate and complex.

For experienced poker players have to realize that they are playing against a pay table not other people. So, many plays are different than a poker player might make.
