Blackjack Fifteens: Hit, Stand, or Double?

What do you do with those awkward hands of fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen? Assuming dealer stands on seventeen, isn't showing anything to make you surrender immediately, and you can't split. I normally hit or double on fourteen, but fifteen and sixteen are more difficult and really do depend on how the cards have been going.

Fourteen I'd either hit or double depending on how the cards are going. On sixteen I'd only win if the dealer went bust, so if surrender gets me half my bet back I'd do that.

I think it makes sense to surrender on sixteen if it's the only way to avoid losing your total bet. I remember when I first started playing blackjack and getting a sixteen and hitting...

LEARN BASIC STRATEGY!!!!

Doubling fourteen against anything is a disaster! (unless it is A,3 then double against 5 or 6 only)

IT NEVER DEPENDS ON "HOW THE CARDS ARE GOING"!

Stealth, you really seem to know what you're talking about. I noticed that you've been very helpful throughout this forum and you've answered a lot of questions some of us had, are you a coach?

I suspect that if I bet the poster's 'How the cards are going' actually means 'How my count of the cards is going' I'd win (especially with a poster called AlltheAces). I also think that bet wouldn't be taken.

If someone could be dead certain that the next card would be a 6 or 7 on fourteen and the dealer's not showing a hand that puts them at risk of going bust, I think I can see why they'd double.

@Tolly, do you really think a good player would admit to card counting on an open forum? But you're right I won't take that bet.

You double when you know the next card won't make you go bust, but that the dealer most likely will, if it is the only way to increase your bet and thus your winnings. The A,3 situation @Stealth describes is one such case but not the only one.

Yes, I am a team manager and a selective coach for students I have an interest in.

@AlltheAces , yes I am a card counter and an advantage player of casino games.

First, I will take the bet that AlltheAces is a card counter, I don't think so and I have certified (tested) many players and will be happy to test him.

No one can be "dead certain" or even have a good idea what the next card is going to be. If they are counting cards then they will have a probability of a high card or a low card. If they double a hard 14 (no Ace) then they are making a big mistake (read idiot).

Blackjack's not something I play often, but I thought for card counters how the cards were going was exactly what all play depended on, since the progression of the cards is what determines your count?

I have a serious sense of deja vu right now. I could have sworn I just read this very same question on another thread. Anyway, I've decided that I'm going to be one of the best card counters in the world so blackjack is one of the games I'm focusing on right now. I've heard conflicting views about what to do on 15 but for now I'll reserve my opinion until I know a little bit more.
