I would like to know if there are any particular strategies that a newcomer to the game may employ to play successfully and if so, what are they and how does one choose the best one?

I am a newbie too, and so far I've been reading up a lot on these games and the various strategies that people use. What I have found out so far is that it doesn't really matter which strategy you choose, but it has to work for you and you must stick with it and improve it as you go. Most people lose because they shift from one strategy to another without giving them time to really work.

I have been reading through some of the posts here on this forum, and there are a great many tips and tricks and strategies that some of the users here share. I think it would be of great help to you if you were to go through some of the older posts.

I take strong exceptions to: "What I have found out so far is that it doesn't really matter which strategy you choose". This a very bad advice.

And: "Most people lose because they shift from one strategy to another without giving them time to really work." This is just plain wrong. Most people lose because you are mathematically supposed to lose! It is a casino game that you are disadvantaged in. You can win long term but you must learn and use card counting to switch the disadvantage to an advantage.

If your intent is to be a recreational player then I suggest you at least familiarize (more appropriately, LEARN) yourself with Basic Strategy. It is the single correct way to play every hand! You will lose less and win more often, but overall you will lose in the long run.

If you are more serious and want to delve into card counting and its associated issues then research carefully, find a mentor and make an informed decision.

That is such great advice, Stealth. Thanks for taking the time to explain these things so clearly for those of us who are totally new to this. I think your tip about getting a mentor is really important.

This brings into sharp focus the fact that as beginners in this game, we have to remember that not everything that we find online is the total truth about the game or the rules. Some articles are misleading and whether it's done intentionally or unintentionally, we need to be careful about the source of our knowledge.
